Self worth is an issue that a lot of young people everywhere struggle with. In their mind’s eye they feel that they can’t measure up to the standards that surround them. Society, friends, and family are large factors that influence how the young people of this generation value themselves. The truth is that you don’t have to be bound to what the world markets as important and cool, you don’t have to conform to the people around you to fit in, you can live a free life and a life of confidence in who you are.

Proverbs 3:26 – For the LORD will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

If you take a look at the verse above, it says ‘the LORD will be your confidence’, not your friends, not the clothes you buy, not the music you listen to, not the car you drive, but the LORD. As a child of God, you’re not alone anymore; you are adopted into his family and are inhabited by His Spirit. You no longer need to look to other places or material objects to determine who you are and what your worth is. You’ve been given a new identity that allows you to live free and without fear. You don’t have to be afraid of situations and circumstances that cause you to feel insecure and doubt your value, because your real source of worth and value comes from Christ who gives you all the confidence you need in any situation.

When obstacles that are in your life cause you to question your value, you don’t have to accept them, when friends or family say or do things that make you doubt your worth, you don’t have to accept them. They are not your source of worth; your worth comes from a much greater power.

Matthew 10:29-31 – Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.

God Himself, the Creator of the Universe, has valued you so much that he’s numbered the individual strands of hair on your head. He cares that much about you that He constantly wants to hang out with you. When you feel alone, He’s there; when you’re doubting your worth, He’s there; when people around you are tearing you down, He’s there, when circumstances arise that cause you to feel insecure, He’s there. He’d be there even if you were the only person on earth because He values you higher than any other form of His creation.

If God has placed such a high value on you, how can society, your friends, or your family tell you differently. Who are they to try and criticize and try to demoralize you into thinking you are less than what you are. You acceptance, your identity and your worth is found in God and in Him alone. It’s the person on the inside that matters most. The person on the inside is an individual, is unique, and is so important to this world that God couldn’t resist creating you.

Psalm 139:7-14 – Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.

I challenge you today to grab a hold of your identity in Christ. You are fearfully and wonderfully made by God. Choose to accept your value and worth on God’s scale and not on man’s. Friends will come and go, fashion will change, time will continue moving on, but God will remain constant, and so will His value of you. Your value isn’t based on your outside appearance, but the heart. See yourself through God’s eyes by getting into His Word and developing your prayer life, and you will experience a new and dynamic life where your value is secured in Christ.
