Romans 8:26
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.
Sometimes it is very difficult to pray and I know that many people struggle in this area of their relationship with God. The amazing thing is that God has not meant for us to pray alone without help.
The Holy Spirit is our helper. Helper means someone who gives assistance and/or support and makes it easier for someone else. The Holy Spirit helps us to pray so that we can pray according to the will of God and so our answers to our requests can be assured. How would it be possible to pray for long hours in our own strength without the Holy Spirit’s help? Even praying ten minutes can feel like hours when we pray alone.
One day I got home from work, kicked off my shoes and threw my handbag down and got on my knees to pray. I was so tired and had a lot on my mind. I started praying in tongues but I was not really there as my mind was in turmoil. The Holy Spirit spoke to me then and said, “Please stop. You are just making some noise but not praying.” I was a bit offended because I felt He should appreciate that at least I am trying. So I asked Him to lead me so I could start to really pray. He led me so beautifully and I stopped four hours later! I don’t know where time went to, but it was such a good experience.
We are weak in our prayer life. When we are going through tough times, it is harder to pray. I had to learn to pray. When people are born again, they are told to pray, but usually no one teaches them to pray. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. We all should learn how to pray.
Prayer is powerful and things change when we pray, so why don’t people pray? Why is it hard? Because we are praying alone and mostly we pray when we are overwhelmed by circumstances. Praying should be our lifestyle and it is about our relationship with God. In all relationships people dialogue and so we dialogue with God in prayer. We build our relationship with God in prayer. Prayer is about love and fellowship and good times with God. It is about being intimate with our amazing Father and changing the world with Him. Prayer is about victory and overcoming.
Holy Spirit please teach me and help me to pray. Help me to be more intentional in prayer and to enjoy the time I am on my knees. I want to experience the power of prayer in the name of Jesus. Amen
