“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.” – 2 Corinthians 4:7
The earthen vessel
Clay is a product of the ground, usually formed close to where there was a flow of water. It is made up of plant matter and various other natural elements of the ebb and flow of natural life. The formation of clay also happens over a long period of time.
Treasure is stored
It’s incredible to think that God-Almighty would choose to have His very treasure stored up in the earthen, clay vessels that we are on this earth. This verse is just exciting. It’s awesome when we are able to see this beautiful treasure of God radiate out of the people around us. Instead of looking for the flaws in others, doesn’t this inspire you to instead look for the treasure in these earthen vessels around us? Maybe this is part of our mandate. Maybe part of why God calls us to ‘love our neighbors as we love ourselves’ is due to the fact that His treasure is what is stored in each person!
The challenge
If we are not loving another person, we are missing the greatest commandment. To love the Lord with all our heart, mind and soul and to love one another. People come from different backgrounds, understandings and cultures. Yet Jesus still asks us to love our brother no matter the colour of their skin, their way of thinking or anything else that makes them unique! Instead of looking for where they might be going wrong, aim to see the beauty and learn to appreciate it. Simply ask God to reveal to you the unique treasure He has placed in someone. This is one way our hearts will change towards each other, no matter how our jars differ. We will start to look at people through our Father’s eyes…and see the gold.
