Fear Not – I Will Help You

Fear not, I will help you – “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10

Some years ago, I was in university preparing for the final phase of my Master’s degree programme in the UK. The value of naira to pounds rose to an all-time high and it became very challenging for my parents to pay my fees. Eventually, I put my study on hold because I could not meet the deadline. I was sad and felt like everything had come to an end. I would not be able to graduate with my colleagues, and worse still; the devil began to pierce my heart with rhetoric of failure.

Although I was the campus fellowship leader and an elected students’ union representative, none one I knew could help. Time was running out and I began to panic. The one who encouraged others when they needed encouragement suddenly could not encourage himself. I could not talk to God about it because I was pretty sure He knew what I was going through – “this is the time for Him to help me, I thought to myself”.

Things remained the same for several weeks. However one day, on my way to my room after a group discussion with my colleagues, I heard a whisper in my ears saying “Fear Not”. I wondered where it came from because I was all by myself. Later that night, I went to God in prayers and I intentionally asked Him to help me. Alas! He responded telling me that provision had been made available for me all along and that He was just waiting for me to ask. He wanted me to keep my focus on Him as my only source, not my parents, as they were just the means. I wept that night and apologized for my misplaced priorities. That same week, the money arrived in my account through my parents from Nigeria and I was able to clear my all outstanding at school.

Sometimes, we think God is not aware of all we are going through. The truth is, He actually is, but the moment you begin to look elsewhere for help, God watches from the rear. Therefore, today’s scripture reminds us of God’s promise: “Fear Not… I will help you”. Even with the recent happenings in the world, if God has promised to help you, why worry about it? Yours is to boldly ask and he’d be glad to come through for you as he did for me.

Prayer

Father, I thank you for where I am today and I thank you for how you’ve helped me thus far. I ask for the grace to trust you and believe Your words always. Lord, I also ask that you strengthen every feeble, scared and troubled heart today in Jesus name.
